A clouded mind, a jealous heart, a darkened soul
In the previous article, we discussed “cultural cringe” and in this article we will discuss “jelousy”.
Jealousy, a corrosive emotion, can be a significant obstacle on the path of karma yoga. A Karma Yogi, focused on selfless action and spiritual growth, may find themselves at odds with the competitive nature of the world. This contrast can sometimes lead to feelings of envy when comparing oneself to others who seem to be more successful or fortunate.
Envy arises from a sense of inadequacy, comparison, and resentment. While it’s natural to feel envy at times, it’s important to recognize its destructive potential and take steps to overcome it.
Envy:
Inadequacy: At its core, envy often stems from a deep-seated feeling of inadequacy. We perceive ourselves as lacking something that another person possesses, whether it’s material possessions, social status, talent, or personal qualities.
The enemy of mind: Envy creates a constant state of internal turmoil. It consumes our thoughts, disrupts our peace of mind, and leads to feelings of anxiety, frustration, and unhappiness.
Social media: It is a breeding ground for comparison and envy. As we are becoming more and more exposed to it, our minds are losing equanimity and becoming turmoiled.
Law of Karma – a pill for jealousy
The Law: It is a fundamental principle in Vedanta, states that every action, thought, and word has a consequence. This law suggests that our present experiences are a result of our past actions, both good and bad.
Empathy: When we understand this principle, we can develop a more compassionate and empathetic attitude towards others. We realize that everyone is on their own unique journey, shaped by their past karma. Instead of feeling jealous of someone’s good fortune, we can acknowledge that they may have worked hard or made sacrifices in past lives to deserve their current blessings.
Shift in perspective: By appreciating the law of karma, we can let go of feelings of resentment and envy. We can focus on our own spiritual growth and strive to create positive karma for the future. This shift in perspective can lead to a more peaceful and fulfilling life.
Karmadhyaksha – the destroyer of despair:
To overcome jealousy, it’s crucial to recognize the divine hand in the workings of karma. When a person understands that karma is in play, they recognize that everything that happens to them, and to others, is a result of past actions. The idea of a “divine hand” adds a layer of acceptance and trust. It suggests that there is a purpose behind everything, even if we don’t fully understand it.
Karmadhyaksha: The concept of “Karmadhyaksha” signifies a higher power that oversees the law of karma and ensures justice. This understanding can help us develop a sense of detachment and acceptance.
Divine justice: When we see someone seemingly enjoying the fruits of the rat race, we should remember that their experiences are a result of their past actions and the divine plan. Instead of feeling envious, we can appreciate the intricate workings of karma and trust in the divine justice system.
Gratitude: By acknowledging the higher power’s role in shaping our destinies, we can cultivate a sense of humility and gratitude. This can help us to let go of negative emotions like jealousy and focus on our own spiritual journey.
To do:
– Reduce exposure to social media
– Study Bhagavad Gita and understand law of Karma & almighty’s central role in the affairs of the cosmos as well as microcosm
– Practice empathy and observe divine’s role in everyday affairs
