In the previous article titled “Eleven-step Pranayama – OM TAPAH”, we discussed the sixth step i.e., the plane of proto-energy.
In this article, we will discuss the seventh step or the seventh level of existence – i.e., “ॐ सत्यं (OM SATHYAM)”.
SATHYAM indicates the plane of “absolute truth”. Puranas also call this Brahma loka because the Prajapait Chaturmukha Brahma resides in this plane. All those liberated souls reside in this plane of existence until the end of Brahma’s lifetime and exit the cycle of creation thereafter.
Ascending to the Plane of Absolute Truth: The Power of “Om Sathyam”:
Beyond the plane of luminous energy lies a higher realm, the plane of absolute truth. This is a realm where all illusions and duality dissolve, revealing the ultimate reality. It is a state of pure consciousness, unclouded by the limitations of the natural world.
In Vedic philosophy, “Sathya” is considered to be the fundamental building block of the universe and “Rta” (ऋत) is the working of the universe.
However, Sathya is often obscured by layers of illusion and ignorance. By tuning into the plane of absolute truth, we can pierce through these veils and experience reality as it truly is.
Dwelling in the absolute truth:
The mantra “Om Sathyam” is the key to accessing this higher plane. When we chant this mantra, we:
Connect with the Ultimate Reality: We align ourselves with the ultimate truth that underlies all existence.
Transcend Illusion: We pierce through the veil of illusion and experience reality as it truly is.
Elevate the consciousness: We elevate to our consciousness to its own true nature.
The deities:
In Vedic tradition, the deities for this mantra are “Vishve-deva” (i.e. all other deities).
According to Sri Aurobindo, Vishve Deva represents the entire company of deities who govern the various forces and phenomena of the universe. These gods are not merely personifications of natural elements but conscious beings with specific functions in the cosmic order.
On a deeper, psychological level, “Vishwe Deva” also represents the diverse faculties and potentialities within the human being. The gods are not just external forces but also inner powers that can be awakened and integrated through spiritual practice.
By consciously uttering “Om Sathyam,” we invoke all other deities not yet invoked and we elevate our consciousness to the level of absolute truth, experiencing a glimpse of enlightenment and liberation. This transformative experience will lead to the ultimate goal of spiritual practice: the realization of one’s true nature as pure consciousness.
With this we have recited Pranava (om) seven times. I.e., Om bhuh, Om bhuvah, Om suvah, Om mahah, Om janah, Om tapah and Om Sathyam. In Vedic pranayama, we inhale with the mental utterance of these seven mantras.
Once this inhalation is over, the next process is to retain the breath. While retaining, we mentally utter Om & Gayatri mantra, Om & Gayatri shiras and the closing Om.
In the next article, the eighth step “Gayatri mantra” will be discussed.
