In the previous article titled “Eleven-step Pranayama – OM SUVAH”, we discussed the third step i.e., the interconnected mental plane of existence.
In this article, we will discuss the fourth step or the fourth level existence – i.e., “ॐ महः (OM MAHAH)”.
SUVAH indicates the plane of existence of “Yogis”. Vishnu Purana says that sages like Bhrgu reside in this plane of existence
Ascending to the Plane of the Yogis: The Power of “Om Mahah”
Beyond the alternate mental plane, where all beings are interconnected, lies a higher realm inhabited by advanced spiritual practitioners, known as yogis. These enlightened beings have transcended the limitations of ordinary consciousness and attained a state of profound spiritual awareness.
The plane of the yogis, symbolized by the syllable “Mahah,” is a realm of yogic consciousness, where the individual mind has transformed into a Yogic mind. By tuning into this plane, we get a glimpse of Yogic plane of existence.
Being among higher beings:
The mantra “Om Mahah” is the key to accessing this higher plane. When we mentally chant this mantra, we:
Connect with Higher Beings: We align ourselves with the spiritual energy of yogis.
Awaken Divine Consciousness: We tap into the yogic spark within us and awaken our spiritual potential.
Experience divine light: We experience the divine light which was otherwise clouded by our own buzzing mind.
When we chant the mantra “Om Mahah,” we embark on a journey both upward and inward, piercing through the layers of our own mind. Our minds, often clouded by ceaseless thoughts and desires, create a veil that obscures the divine light within us.
As we delve deeper into meditation, the power of the mantra begins to dissolve this mental fog. The constant chatter of our thoughts subsides, and a profound vision emerges. In this stillness, we begin to experience a radiant light, a divine consciousness that has always been present, yet hidden from our view.
This divine light is the source of all creation, the essence of our being. By connecting with this light, we experience a profound sense of peace, joy, and interconnectedness. We realize that we are not merely physical beings, but spiritual beings having a human experience.
The deity:
In Vedic tradition, the deity for this mantra is “Brihaspati or Brahmanaspati”. In popular culture we worship him as “Ganapati”.
According to Sri Aurobindo, Brahmanaspati is represents the divine power of speech, wisdom, and knowledge.
Brahmanaspati is seen as a guide who leads us towards truth and enlightenment. He illuminates the mind with knowledge and dispels ignorance.
By consciously uttering “Om Mahah,” we invoke Ganapati and elevate our consciousness to the level of the yogis, experiencing a glimpse of their plane of existence. This transformative experience makes us more eager to deepen our spiritual practice and progress further.
In the next article, the fifth step “OM JANAH” will be discussed.
