In the previous article titled “Eleven-step Pranayama – OM MAHAH”, we discussed the fourth step i.e., the planes where yogis dwell.
In this article, we will discuss the fifth step or the fifth level – i.e., “ॐ जनः (OM JANAH)”.
JANAH indicates the plane of “Enlightened Yogis”. Bhagavata Purana says that this is the adobe of deity Varuna. According to Brahmanda Purana, all deities of heavens take shelter in this plane of existence when the lower planes are dissolved.
Ascending to the Plane of Enlightened Yogis: The Power of “Om Janah”
Beyond the plane of the yogis, where advanced spiritual practitioners reside, lies a higher realm inhabited by enlightened beings who experience higher state of consciousness. These enlightened beings, have transcended the limitations of the physical & mental realms, realizing their true nature as pure consciousness.
The plane, symbolized by the syllable “Janah,” is a realm of divine bliss and eternal peace. It is a state of pure consciousness, devoid of all limitations and suffering. By tuning into this plane, we will experience of the divine and awaken to our true nature.
Being among enlightened beings:
Those who ascend to this higher level of consciousness witness the beings of higher level of existence, while their physical body is still part of the physical world.
Appearing as a normal living being from our perspective, they are still bound by the cycle of birth and death. But they have overcome the limitations of the physical and mental body. They live in a state of bliss and peace, free from suffering and ignorance. Though their physical body resides in our plane, their consciousness resides in the higher plane JANAH.
Their consciousness has become pure and they dwell in the divine bliss. In our plane of existence they are often described as living embodiments of divine love and compassion.
The mantra “Om Janah” is the key to accessing this higher plane. When we mentally chant this mantra, we:
Connect with the enlightened Beings: We align ourselves with the spiritual energy of enlightened beings.
Observe Divine Consciousness: We observe the divine consciousness within us and enhance our spiritual potential.
The deity:
In Vedic tradition, the deity for this mantra is “Varuna”.
According to Sri Aurobindo, Varuna is associated with the vastness of the cosmic being, the infinite extension of consciousness and existence. He represents the boundless ether, the all-encompassing ocean of divine being.
By consciously uttering “Om Janah,” we invoke Varuna and elevate our consciousness to the level of the higher beings. With this we experience a profound sense of peace, love, and freedom. This transformative experience will lead to the ultimate goal of spiritual practice – the longing for liberation!
In the next article, the sixth step “OM TAPAH” will be discussed.
