In the previous article titled “Eleven-step Pranayama – INTRODUCTION”, we discussed that one cycle of pranayama involves inhalation, retention and exhalation. In inhalation, first seven steps are designed to guide us through seven levels of existence.
In this article, we will discuss the first step or the first level – i.e., “ॐ भूः (OM BHUH)”.
BHUH indicates earthly and physical plane of existence!
Embarking on the Spiritual Journey: Starting with the Physical Plane
The initial step in any spiritual journey, including the Vedic path of pranayama, begins with a profound awareness of our physical existence.
This may seem counterintuitive, as spirituality often implies transcending the physical realm. However, without a solid grounding in the physical, our spiritual aspirations will become fleeting and insubstantial.
The Importance of Grounding
By acknowledging and accepting our physical body, we establish a strong foundation for our spiritual journey. This grounding allows us to:
Centre Ourselves: It helps us to focus on the present moment, rather than being lost in past regrets or future anxieties.
Cultivate Mindfulness: By being aware of our physical sensations, we will develop a deeper sense of mindfulness.
Connect with the Divine: When we are fully present in our bodies, we are better able to connect with the divine energy that permeates all existence.
The Role of “Om Bhuh”
In the Vedic tradition, the mental utterance of “Om Bhuh” is the first step in the eleven-step pranayama process. This simple yet powerful mantra serves several purposes:
Physical Grounding: It anchors our consciousness to the physical plane, symbolized by the syllable “Bhuh.”
Mental Clarity: It clears the mind of distractions and brings focus to the present moment.
Spiritual Awakening: It awakens the divine energy within us, preparing us for deeper spiritual experiences.
The deity:
In Vedic tradition, the deity for this mantra is “Agni”.
Sri Aurobindo explains “Agni” as the “flaming will” of the Godhead, the active force that manifests the divine consciousness in the universe. It is the energy that drives creation, evolution, and all transformative processes.
“Agni” is the “seer-will” in the universe, unerring in its works, guiding all actions towards the ultimate goal of divine manifestation.
By consciously uttering “Om Bhuh,” we initiate our spiritual journey by invoking “Agni” and moving from the mundane to the divine. This simple act lays the groundwork for a more profound connection with ourselves and the cosmic consciousness.
In the next article, the second step “Om bhuvah” will be discussed.
