SEVEN ENEMIES OF KARMA-YOGA – MENTAL EXHAUSTION

The cycle of conflicting values:

In the previous article, we discussed “lethargy” and in this article we will discuss “mental exhaustion”.

Mental exhaustion is a common challenge, especially for those practicing karma yoga. Because a Karma-yogi is pulled by conflicting thoughts – desire to enjoy worldly pleasure on one hand and desire to turn inwards on the other. In between these two extremes, sadhaka is required to perform Karma-yoga.

The irony of karma yoga is that the more we try to detach from outcomes, the more our minds tend to obsess over them. This paradoxical phenomenon, similar to the “pink elephant paradox,” can lead to a vicious cycle of conflicting thoughts and mental exhaustion.

Overcoming Mental Exhaustion: The Power of Constructive Distraction

As humans, we are prone to conflicting thoughts, anxieties, and desires. These can disrupt our mental peace and hinder our ability to act effectively.

Destructive distraction: To escape this cycle of negative thoughts, people often resort to “destructive distractions” such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, binge-watching, or excessive social media use. Similarly, a Karma Yogi may also face the temptation of these destructive distractions when confronted with conflicting values and mental exhaustion. These distractions not only hinder spiritual progress but can also negatively impact physical and mental health.

Constructive distraction: It must be noted that there is an alternative: “constructive distraction”! The technique is characterized by its subtlety and efficacy. Unlike destructive distractions, which often exacerbate the problem, constructive distractions offer a healthy outlet for our mental energy.

Productive activities: Constructive distraction is a technique that involves redirecting one’s focus from negative or unproductive thoughts to positive and productive activities. By engaging in these activities, we can effectively manage stress, anxiety, and mental fatigue.

Remember:

– The key insight here is that trying to forcefully suppress these conflicting thoughts often backfires. It can lead to increased mental tension and exhaustion.

– Instead, it is suggested to distracting the mind by redirecting its focus towards productive activities. This means engaging fully in the task at hand, with concentration and dedication.

To do:

Mindful Activities: Engaging in activities like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing can calm the mind and reduce stress.

Physical Exercise: Physical activity, such as walking, running, or swimming, can help release endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce stress.

Social Connection: Spending time with loved ones or joining social groups can provide emotional support and help shift focus.

Creative Pursuits: Engaging in hobbies like singing, musical instrument, painting, writing, or playing  a musical instrument can be a therapeutic way to express oneself.

By incorporating constructive distractions into our daily routine, we can alleviate mental exhaustion and cultivate a more balanced and peaceful mind.

Remember, the goal of karma yoga is to maintain an equanimous mind. This can be achieved not by suppressing conflicting thoughts but by distracting the mind from such thoughts towards productive activities. This prevents mental exhaustion and contributes to our overall development.

In the next article, we will discuss the enemy “Cultural cringe”.
